STEPS TO GETTING AN IOWA REAL ESTATE LICENSE
Step 1 - Interview Potential Brokers
While this may seem a little early in the process; most brokers are really happy to help you navigate the pre-license requirements and make sure you don't accidentally miss something. We can also give you a lot of tips on what to expect for income, pay structures, tools, technology, and start-up expenses overall.
Step 2 - Pre-License Course
Here are two main options to get a license - online or in classroom. Each individual makes the decision for course delivery based on their individual learning style and scheduling. We now offer COMPLETELY FREE pre-license courses online through KSCORE!
Step 3 - Background Check - Before you get too involved in taking a real estate pre-license course; be sure you understand that a criminal background check will be required. This is an FBI level background check. They are not looking to deny a license for most misdemeanor offenses; but will be looking to deny licenses to felons and anyone convicted of a crime that is detrimental to the public. This MUST be done before a license is issued and can take 6-8 weeks so don't start it too late! This MUST be done through the state, no prior background check or one provided through any other source will be accepted. You will need to create an account at the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau - https://plb.iowa.gov/ - under Real Estate Salespersons and Brokers.
