STEPS TO GETTING AN IOWA REAL ESTATE LICENSE
Step 4 - 36 Hours of Classroom Education
Buying Practices, Listing Practices, Developing Professionalism - these must be taken in classroom prior to the issuance of a license. You can take these before, during, or after your pre-license course but must be finished and issued a certificate prior to getting a license.
Step 5 - Pre-License Testing - The big moment! You will need to schedule your pre-license test and take it live at a testing center. You will need your certificate from your pre-license class that day, along with your identification, a pencil, and a basic calculator. No phones are allowed. There are some pre-license prep courses you can take online, through an app, and in classroom so be sure to check those out if you need a little extra help! The pre-license test includes two sections, state and national. If you fail one section you are allowed to take that section again, but you will pay the same amount to take the test.
Step 6 - E&O Insurance
Every licensee will need to get E&O insurance set up. This is coverage in case of an error or an omission on your part that results in a lawsuit seeking damages against you and is required by Iowa Real Estate Commission. Be sure to talk with the broker you have chosen to affiliate with about getting this in place!
Step 7 - Apply for License!
Assuming your background check is complete, you will need to get with the broker you have selected to work under to complete and apply online, you will need E&O coverage proof, class certificates and a pass notice from your tests. This will likely take you and the broker about 30 minutes to complete and the Iowa Real Estate Commission a few days to process - then you will be a real estate agent!
